Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. While working two job opportunities, Scott was also a teacher at Temple University. She hoped to become a teacher of English at a secondary school. After three years as a teacher's aide and studying the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher was cut short. Being a poet started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. Then she joined along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form an ensemble. The two wrote You Got Me together. In Roots' performance she showed herself to be an artist. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
